Recital at Ulrich Museum of Art

Tuesday, March 15 6:00pm

The Lieurance Woodwind Quintet will present an evening of chamber music in this intimate gallery atmosphere. Here you will be able to hear and almost feel the music, the vibrations, and the emotions. Discover for yourself what The Washington Post described as "sustained depth and sensitivity" in a program of varied music. Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin is well known and loved in its orchestral version. The French composer’s impression of a baroque suite, originally composed for solo piano, will be presented in a transcription for wind quintet by Mason Jones. German composer August Klughardt’s Quintett, Op. 79 is a staple of Romantic chamber repertoire. Its lush sonorities and dramatic moments are sure to move the audience. Ingolf Dahl’s Allegro and Arioso for Five Wind Instruments, composed in 1942, shows stylistic influence of the Second Viennese school of Schoenberg, Webern, and Berg. The singular harmonies of this work feature free atonality and complex chromaticism. The metric complexity brings a new level of rhythmic interest. Come hear five wind players extracted from the symphony orchestra blending their diverse timbres, displaying their versatility and virtuosity in a rare and unusual setting.

“Music of the Americas Recital” featuring The Lieurance Wind Quintet

The Lieurance Woodwind Quintet has taken on the task of examining music written by composers since our group’s inception. The borrowing and blending of compositional techniques, antiquated forms, ethnic and poly-rhythms, not to mention popular song and jazz is the constant thread linking these distinctly “American” works together. Spanning influences from four continents—Europe, North American, Africa, and South America—these works demonstrate how fertile soil can grow infinite diversity.

  • Quintet for Winds Robert Muczynski
  • Dance Suite Paul Valjean
  • Quintet for Winds John Harbison
  • Quintet no. 2 Alec Wilder
  • Woodwind Quintet Elliot Carter
  • Suite Hermetica Liduino Pitombeira

Premiere of Odysseia by Nickitas Demos of Georgia State University, winner of the NACWPI 2010 Composition Competition.

Performance and Clinic at Iowa Bandmasters Association Convention

The Lieurance Woodwind Quintet performed a recital and presented a clinic at the 2010 Conference of the Iowa Bandmasters Association May 13, 2010 in Des Moines, IA. The recital included works by Franz Danzi, Robert Muczynski, Liduino Pitombeira, Irving Fine, and Jaques Ibert. The clinic, Rehearsal techniques for small ensembles, focused on practical methods for rehearsing chamber ensembles.

We would like to thank Wichita State University and the R.W. and Dorthea Dean Endowment Fund for making our appearance at this event possible.

Upcoming Performance in Washington, DC - New CD coming soon.

This June 18-22, 2010, the Lieurance Woodwind Quintet has been invited to and will present a recital for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors at the MENC Convention in Washington D.C. The recital, “Music of the Americas,” explores ground-breaking music written by composers since our group’s inception. The borrowing and blending of compositional techniques, antiquated forms, ethnic and poly-rhythms, not to mention popular song and jazz are the constant threads linking these distinctly “American” works together. The quintet is also honored to present the world-premiere of composer Nickitus Demos’ chamber work, “Alliances” at the Convention.

These exciting works can be heard on our soon-to-be-released CD on the SUMMIT label, “Music from the Americas,” recorded in our own Wiedemann Recital Hall.
